I’m always on the hunt for new books. Every time when I jump on social media, which I’m desperately trying to keep under control, I see that there are countless new books coming out this year. If it really piques my interest I add it straight away to my bookshop list. When I looked at my ever growing list on my little digital bookshop, I saw that there is a nice little group of books (more than 10 since then) waiting to be introduced and talked about in here.
From Fiction to NonFiction, I Devour Everything
There are so many interesting books coming out this year, I honestly can’t wait. I love the surge of South-Korean action/mystery/fantasy. Japanese cosy, slice-of-life books are just healing remedies for my aching soul. I can never get tired of it. Historical fiction with some mystical elements, environmental dystopian fiction, unhinged sci-fi bots and some nice small town horror… Just so good if you are a reader who loves to read in a wide genre.
Where to Find my Book Lists
If you are curious about the list but not so much about my rumbling, you can find the booklists on my bookshop.org digital shop/corner. I hope you find something interesting there. Here is the US list* and the UK list*.
note: This post is about the books that can be found on both lists, but there are additional choices as well, depending on the country’s availability. There are books on the UK list that are already out in the US or not listed at all there. And vice versa, so just keep this in mind while browsing.
The Second Chance Convenience Store* (US)* by Kim Ho-Yeon and translated from Korean by Janet Hong.
genre: Modern & contemporary fiction; Translated Fiction, little bit of suspense as well.
short blurb: Second chances in life, beautiful relationship between a homeless man who is doing a good deed and a retired teacher, now new store owner. A sense of community and a drop of suspense.
The Passengers on the Hankyu Line* (US)* by Hiro Arikawa and translated from Japanese by Allison Markin Powell.
genre: Modern & contemporary fiction; Translated Fiction, slice of life feeling.
short blurb: The author of The Travelling Cat Chronicles* (US)*, a heart-warming scenic train route on the Hankyu Line between Kyoto and Osaka. We get to know the passengers and their life stories. For readers who loved What You Are Looking For is in the Library* (US)* by Michiko Aoyama.
Automatic Noodle* (US)* by Annalee Newitz
genre: Modern & contemporary fiction, science-fiction
short blurb: A group of de-commissioned service bots after the war, decide to open their own restaurants and make some tasty noodles.
Burnt Sparrow – We Are Always Tender With Our Dead* (US)* by Eric LaRocca
genre: Horror & ghost stories; transgressive literary horror
short blurb: Eric LaRocca is the author of the highly regarded and awarded novel; Things Have Gotten Worse since We Last Spoke* (US)*
Burnt Sparrow is a Trilogy and We Are Always Tender With Our Dead is the first volume of that. || An isolated small New England town called Burnt Sparrow gets shaken on Christmas morning when a brutal massacre takes place.
All The Way to The River* (US)* by Elizabeth Gilbert
genre: non-fiction, memoir, children and teenage years mentioned
short blurb: The author of Eat, Pray, Love* (US)* and Big Magic* (US)*, now comes with a memoir of sorts where she takes us on a journey of her teenage years. Especially with one person whose friendship, love and addiction altered her life.
The Original* (US)* by Nell Stevens
genre: Historical fiction, Modern & contemporary fiction
short blurb: The author of Briefly, A Delicious Life* (US)* (highly recommended || my review) comes with another deliciously sounding historical fiction novel.
1899, Oxfordshire. A painter, Grace, who lives in her uncle’s home, receives a letter addressed to Saint Helena. The uncle, Charles comes home after a long time being missing at sea, unrecognisable to some saying, he is an impostor and only recognisable to his mother. Mysticism, eeriness and secrets.
Flashlight* (US)* by Susan Choi
genre: Modern & contemporary fiction
short blurb: From Japan, to North Korea and to the US. A family tragedy and the story behind slowly unravels.
The Midnight Shift* (US)* by Cheon Seon-ran and translated from Korean by Gene Png
genre: Translated Fiction, Conjuring & Magic, Fantasy
short blurb: It’s queer, it’s a murder mystery and we also have vampires and vampire hunters in it. It deals with societal issues such as depression, loneliness and isolation.
Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil* (US)* by V. E. Schwab
genre: Fantasy, Horror
short blurb: I don’t think I need to introduce the author or even this book but I’m so, so excited for this one.
3 women at 3 different times and places. One is set in 1532 in Santa Domingo de La Calzada, another one in 1827, London and the third one in 2019, Boston. It’s queer, it’s powerful, dark, hungry and raw and it’s mystical and fantastical.
I’m so excited for these books. I’m currently waiting on Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil from the independent Gay Pride Shop (UK). It is the signed hardcover copy with a gorgeous tote bag. note: It just came now and it looks stunning. Have a look at my insta.
What’s Next…
I’ve just read Blood Over Bright Haven* (US)* by M.L.Wang. Instant fantasy love at first read. Strong world building, complex character arcs and an absolute page turner.
