Weekly Thoughts #1

Hi Folks,
This is my first Weekly Thoughts to post and I’m just trying out new things to see and feel how they evolve with time. I would also like to let people in (if they are interested) to witness my ‘fight’ with writer’s block that’s been going on for some time now (approx. 16 years) There are some things that I would like to try out and see if they have any effect on me.
This being said I’m still studying full-time as an Astronomy undergraduate and currently suffering with my Cosmology module (send help) and working part-time so I try to be consistent as much as possible but probably life will interrupt me at certain points. However, to be honest I have to be consistent if I want to get back to writing.I have to manage my time and somehow have some sleep and some social life to a certain degree so my mental health stays intact. (It’s already in shambles). So it’s not easy and I’m sure many of you are having the same problems as well when you want to do something for yourself like a passion or a hobby but just can’t seem to find the time no matter how hard and diligently you try. Nevertheless, trying is always a good idea.
The Struggle with Writing

I was looking for some materials on creative writing, especially books when I came across a post where someone mentioned that it was not a book that they found invaluable regarding any writing process but rather a lecture series by Brandon Sanderson. I have to admit at this point that I never read anything from him but I always wanted to. Regardless of my lack of familiarity with his work I know how famous he is and how everyone praises him (probably for a good reason) so I thought: ‘Why not? I can’t lose anything anyway.’
I have watched the introduction only and I have to admit something clicked in my head. It is more than inspirational. It gave me a purpose, a structure that I can mold to my own personality to my own habits and it finally gave me the answer that I was always looking for; Why I can’t write anymore.
The things that I’m doing. The jobs that I have. The university. Basically, since I left high school (and that was the last time when I could write on a daily basis, immersing and putting my soul on fire for every line) I was not able to write anymore. I knew something was blocking me but I couldn’t find out what exactly. And the answer was always this simple;
The kind of work and studying you do can impact your brain space for writing.If you are working in a place where there is a lot of pressure on you, or you basically never leave your workplace (even if physically yes,) you just simply won’t have the tranquility, the calmness in your brain for your creative juices to flow. Simple as that. If you can’t switch off you won’t be able to build a story. Obviously, we are all different. It can be that there are people who are completely fine doing serious jobs and writing amazingly on the side, and I’m in absolute awe if someone can do this. They must have a nerve system made out of rubber, that nothing and no one can break but I’m definitely not one of them.
I needed to spot my problem and isolate it. Look at it from every angle and come up with a plan to tackle it.
If you are someone who would love to write but came to a halt at the moment and don’t know how to move forward I really do wholeheartedly recommend his lecture series. I will definitely continue watching it.
