Weekly Bookish Thoughts #3 Everyone!
I was reading quite at a good pace this past week. I have finished Game of Thrones* and I have uploaded a spoiler-free review, please go and have a look here!
I really did enjoy George R. R. Martin’s way of writing. It’s absolutely my style and as far as i’m concerned he writes more in an intuitive than a structured way, even though he does have a strong foundation. Which I know from first hand experience that is probably the most unhinged and bold way to write, but also the most honest and rewarding as well. I mean you can try it for yourself.

Think about a story, where you know the start and the end, who are the characters, where is the story located etc… but don’t work out anything else in detail. As you sit down to write and you let the story write itself, especially, when you are in the sweet spot of ‘flow’ you will see, feel and write magic (or no), but you will be surprised what you can actually come up with in the haste of writing.

Anyway, back to the book. Absolutely loved Game of Thrones. I’m getting ready to read the next volume in the Song of Ice and Fire Saga*, the Clash of Kings*. Probably, I will read it after October, because today is the 22nd of September, I’m roughly half-way through with my current read and I think I just won’t be able to squeeze in another chunky one before diving into the horror reads* this year. But after October I’m strictly marching on with the Song of Ice and Fire series.

A Cosy, Slice-of-Life Gem from Japanese Fiction

I have also read What You Are Looking For Is in the Library* by Michiko Aoyama and translated from Japanese to English by Alison Watts. The review (spoiler and spoiler-free) will come up as soon as I get to upload this post so keep your eyes peeled if you are interested. Although, let me tell you just this much: I am positively in love with the style and the whole premise of it. It’s slice-of-life, it’s cosy and heartwarming, many might say self-help (?!) which I kinda get and understand, but I think the intention behind this book was much more. Especially, if we are looking at how everything was connected.

Anyway, trying not to go into too much detail here, I truly enjoyed it. I was smiling the whole time, sometimes tears were falling because I’m a sensitive and dramatic person. As I said, I will keep you guys updated when the review comes out. Also, if you have read this book and you have similar recommendations for me please reach out to me. I’m mostly on instagram as @nolitethoughts but you can also find me through my socials at the home page. I’m always on the hunt for new reads, especially the ones that have the ability to heal my soul.

Current Reads: The Sci-fi Duo of the Year

As for what I am reading now? I have started The Expanse series** by James S. A. Corey with the first volume: The Leviathan Wakes* and I love it so far. I first read it in Hungarian in roughly around 2013 and I remember how much I loved it back then. It’s fun, it’s action-packed, the world-building has strong foundations and everything seems to work. If you are a reader who tends to vividly imagine the scenes in your head, you will have a fun time with this one. I can totally see why they made a series out of it. The characters are full of life and the dialogues are witty. I’m currently halfway through-ish with it and highly likely to finish it before October. A review will most likely to follow slightly afterwards.

Next Reads: Spooky October

As for moving forward we are almost in October! September just flew by so quickly I can’t even seem to remember it. This is something that I should probably not brag about. Anyway, I’m preparing for it with full thrust, because I love Halloween and I love to read horror books. Even though I don’t really watch horror movies or play horror games, because I’m just not a big fan of jump scares. I’m not going to tap into it too much now, but below you can find my curated list of the 10 Unnerving Books for October* so please go have a look. I have read two from that list and there are 3 more books that I did not read, but I have read multiple titles from those authors. So I am fairly sure that I’m probably going to like them. Few of them are ebooks but I have physical copies as well. More details will be revealed in the upcoming weekly thoughts. I will also have more recommendations regarding books to read in October as many of them couldn’t make the list because bookshop.org simply just did not have them (or I just couldn’t find it) so I will put out the links for them accordingly, from other sources where applicable. Back to reading!
