Beginnings and Closures 🍂

I’m back after well… months. I had underestimated the sheer amount of sweat, blood and tears required to finish my Bachelors in Astronomy and Planetary Science. It was tough, but I have finally sent my final work in and ready to pick up where I left off. Hopefully, I will be able to be more active here and continue upgrading my website and share more content on amazing books and authors and maybe my own stories as well.
Expectations and Excitement

This month, in September I have finally given in and started on the journey of reading the Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. I know, I know I’m a naive summer child who doesn’t know what she started. Winter is here and looks like it will be here for a while until Señor Martin finishes the books. But hey, I just started to read Game of Thrones so I’m all ready for it. I’m also planning to write a spoiler-free review about it.
I also have 3 other books that I was planning to read in September in no particular order, so if you wish you can help me pick my next read. It is shown as a poll on the main page. I will update it as often as I finish the next book and another one comes into its place. As of today, 14th of September, the next read that has been picked for me the most is actually the other series that I’m going to read and re-read. It’s going to be the first book of the Expanse Series, Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey. Re-reading because I started the series when it first came out in Hungarian as Leviatán ébredése in 2013 or so, and reading because I never finished the series and I really want to from a long time ago. It’s science fiction full with complex and interesting characters, action-packed and highly creative and realistic (!) regarding its futuristic world-building. I remember how much I enjoyed reading it back then and now that the final book came out in the series it is time to truly re-read it from the beginning.

The other 2 books are not part of a series but this doesn’t mean that I’m not equally excited to start them. One of them belongs to Japanese literature which I’m undoubtedly invested in every single time when I can discover a new author. I never know what I will find, but whatever it may be it will probably stay with me for a while. Disturbingly or hauntingly but it definitely stays. These books are my companions. My soulmates and my whispering muses.
Anyway, this month I’m planning to read What You Are Looking For Is In The Library by Michiko Aoyama and translated by Alison Watts. Based on the synopsis it seems cosy and comforting which might be a good idea in between intense sagas and before October, where I’m planning to read horror books as well. We have a library with a special librarian who can give us the perfect book based on our struggles in life. I mean, I wish. Actually, my elementary school librarian was exactly like her so no wonder that books became my safe haven even in my adult years. I’m curious and interested, it is a slim book so a quick read for sure. Which would not be the case, if I read it in japanese. I currently read Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto and oh boy, it goes painstakingly slowly. I will get there one day. You can find here the Japanese edition.
The final book is a non-fiction one called Life and Language Beyond Earth by Raymond Hickey. It’s linguistics meets astrobiology which is absolutely tailored for me, it couldn’t be more perfect. I don’t seem to find many books that are talking about astrolinguistics in any shape or form excluding fictional stories like Arrival by Ted Chiang, which is hands down one of my favourite movies based on my favourite author’s work so I’m biased.

Raymond Hickey is an Irish linguist and adjunct professor at the University of Limerick, in Ireland. Also holds the title for being an emeritus professor at the University of Duisburg and Essen, situated in Germany. There are countless books edited by him, including The Oxford Handbook of Irish English. You can find more information about him on his website, including his research areas and several other book projects. I’m so fascinated by the whole premise of connecting my Astronomy knowledge with my undying love for languages and speculating about the different ways of functionality of language and communication with other life forms in the universe if they were to exist. I would even go as far as being absolutely fired up if I could choose this as my research area, would love this field to see evolve and flourish in the future. So I can’t wait to read this book and learn more and be starstruck by it!
